PrintEveryone likes to see small, independently owned businesses succeed, especially ones in your neighborhood. It’s not easy for little mom and pop shops like Gadsden Guns to compete with big names and big advertising budgets, so we rely on a very special type of person to help us pay the bills every month. Fortunately for us, our customers and neighbors are exactly that kind of person, and we hope you are, too.

The thing is, there are a lot of people out there who are “all talk.” They say they want to see small businesses do well, but instead of eating at the local, family-owned restaurant, they dine at Applebees or Waffle House. These are the people that complain that a new Wal-Mart is going to put the local places out of business, but can be found standing in line at that same Wal-Mart on opening day. Most of these types of people couldn’t even tell you the names of the local pizza joint, the Ma and Pop gas station, the cute boutique that their neighbor just opened down the street.

In recent years, there’s been a massive resurgence of the Gadsden Flag. All over the country, Americans are flying the bright banner emblazoned with the iconic words Don’t Tread On Me, but what does that mean?

Odds are, you’ve sat through a history class at some point in your life and heard a teacher talk about the history and meaning behind this icon. Perhaps that was a long time ago, though, and perhaps you didn’t get the whole story. I know in my case, there’s a lot from my school days that I don’t really remember, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In case you’re like me and need a refresher, let’s talk history. You might be surprised at how relevant it still is.
